THE
FOLLOWING QUOTATIONS AND POEMS ARE TAKEN FROM THE PUBLICATION 'DO YOU SEE WHAT
I SEE?' FUNDED BY THE COST OF THE TROUBLES STUDY, SAVE THE CHILDREN AND THE
CULTURAL DIVERSITY PROGRAMME OF THE COMMUNITY RELATIONS COUNCIL. IT CONVEYS
YOUNG PEOPLE'S EXPERIENCE OF THE TROUBLES IN THEIR OWN WORDS "Her wee brother and sister can't sleep in the back room. They're too afraid, cause their back window's been done (petrol bombed, bricked...) that many times. They're too afraid to sleep in their own room. Her wee sister sleeps between her mummy and daddy, and her wee brother upstairs" YOUNG WOMAN IN NORTH BELFAST "Well, the age group we're all at, we all grew up through the Troubles, and we all know somebody or have lost somebody very close to us... Everyone maybe in North Belfast would have, should it be a neighbour or an aunt, an uncle, a son, cousin. You know, everybody's affected, like. Everybody has their own story to tell... Some people have lost even more than one in one family." YOUNG MAN IN NORTH BELFAST "My mummy doesn't like me going out of my estate... As long as she knows exactly where I am, I'm alright, but she wouldn't let me go for a walk or anything, like, unless I was with her. She doesn't like me just going into town on my own or with my friends because she says I'm far too easy a target, you know, if something happen in the town, ans I'd have no way of getting home..."
