• in the UK, one child in six has suffered from violent punishment in the home. And one in three 12- to 15-year-olds say they have been assaulted outside their homes by adults or other children.

• it's impossible to give a global figure for the number of children who are sexually exploited. But this form of violence affects children in most, if not all, countries.

• worldwide, 50 million people have been forced from their homes by war and conflict. Of these, over 13 million are classed as refugees by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Children usually make up more than half of refugee populations.
