Slum fire in Andhra Pradesh

Save the Children responds to 500 families affected by slum fire in Andhra Pradesh

Save the Children has launched a rapid response to provide aid to 500 families affected by a large fire that engulfed slums Rajiv Gandhi Nagar and Ganesh Nagarin in Rajmandry city in the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh on 4 December. More than 2,000 children were affected by the fire.

The fire destroyed homes and left hundreds of families without any belongings, including their essential cooking equipment and clothes. The majority of children have not been able to return to school since the incident as their text books and school uniforms went up in flames.

Save the Children is providing 436,980 INR (£5,000) towards a relief operation that will target the most vulnerable families, reaching around 1,000 children. The response programme will deliver essential food items, utensils, blankets and bed sheets to the worst affected families. Children will be provided with education materials and new school uniforms and their families will be given kitchen sets.
