Save the Children’s new online shopping catalogue is now live. As well as the range of cards, stationery and fair trade gifts this year’s catalogue features some interesting additions – virtual gifts that will make a real and immediate difference to some of the poorest communities in the world. For just £10 you can buy a friend 1,000 water purification tablets. Your friend will receive a card with a certificate showing the gift you have bought. The purification tablets will be sent directly to a country where by providing safe drinking water they can make the difference between life and death. For £10 you could also buy six plastic buckets. It might not seem like much, but when families have lost everything, something as simple as a bucket will enable them to collect, store and use sufficient quantities of water to survive. |
£20 buys a hygiene kit, with basics such as soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes and cleaning products. The supply of essential hygiene materials is a key factor in reducing the risk of epidemics during emergencies. This was demonstrated when the feared epidemics after the boxing day tsunami never materialized, largely due to the aid agencies providing effective hygiene and sanititation materials. |

Other gifts with a difference include mosquito nets, tarpaulin shelters and tents.
