The UN Security Council has adopted a groundbreaking resolution to help protect children caught up in armed conflict.
Friday 7 August 2009
The new resolution, called Resolution 1882, calls upon the Secretary General to widen his “list of shame” to focus not only on recruitment of children into armed forces, but also on groups involved in killing or maiming children, and rape and sexual violence in wartime.
This is a fundamental step in the protection of children caught up in conflict, as girls and boys are increasingly targeted and victimized, killed and raped. The new list will mean better protection for children on the ground, as the UN will be able to drive forward mediations with armed forces and groups to stop violations, such as rape and sexual violence, and to bring perpetrators to account.
Save the Children has played an integral role in bringing about these changes due to our advocacy work on the issue.
