KROO BAY NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER 2008 |
|

|
Dear Friend,
We were about to bring you some really positive stories from the work we're doing in Kroo Bay - the difference the river banking work has made during this year's rainy season. But on 11 September Freetown was hit by exceptionally heavy rain. Kroo Bay was badly affected too. Although the river banking work made a difference, there was too much rain for the banks to contain. Homes were flooded and residents spent their weekend bailing water out of their homes.
Thankfully no lives were lost.
In June we trained 60 Blue Flag Volunteers to recognise and treat cases of diarrhoea - always worse during the rains. As a precaution we're now training more people up, so that more lives can be saved.
So what else are we bringing you this month?
Deadly malaria
Malaria is a big problem. Mosquitoes hang around stagnant water, of which there's plenty in Kroo Bay, ready to attack their victims. Sadly these victims are often children. Mohammed lost two of his young children to malaria and shares his sad story with us. With your support we can help to stop tragedies like this happening again.

Save the Children, 1 St John's Lane, London, EC1M 4AR
We are the world's independent children's charity. We're outraged that millions of children are
still denied proper healthcare, food, education and protection. We're working flat out to get
every child their rights and we're determined to make further, faster changes. How many? How
fast? It's up to you.
