Campaign Update from UNICEF UK
Dear Supporter,
October 2007

Brown fails his first test on AIDS
Thank you to all campaigners who asked Gordon Brown to fully fund the Global Fund. Sadly, at the Labour Party Conference, Gordon Brown announced that the UK would pledge just half the amount it had promised to the Fund.

Despite this news, UNICEF and partners continue to lobby the UK Government on funding for HIV and AIDS. As part of this work, UNICEF is now demanding that ambitious funding targets are included in its new AIDS strategy which will be launched in Spring 2008.

Gaps in UK Government policy towards trafficked children
A new report by UNICEF UK and ECPAT UK shows that, despite recent moves made by the UK Government to tackle child trafficking, there are still significant gaps in child protection standards for trafficked children compared with international standards.

The report, Rights Here, Rights Now: Recommendations for protecting trafficked children, calls for a number of solutions. These include providing each trafficked child with a guardian to uphold their best interests and renewable residence permits to secure their legal status.

New UNICEF surveys reveal solid progress on child survival
New figures show solid progress on child survival, including a decline in the annual number of under-five deaths. Global child deaths have reached a record low, falling below 10 million per year. This figure is down from almost 13 million in 1990. However, this progress must be built upon if the Millennium Development Goals are to be achieved by 2015.

Maternal mortality rate still high
Research published by UNICEF and partners shows that over 500,000 women die in childbirth each year. Despite the MDG focus on maternal health, and its aim to slash mortality rates by 75 per cent, little progress has been made. Improved health care and universal access to reproductive services must be made a priority.

Take action with UNICEF UK
bullet Stop millions of children dying because of broken AIDS promises.
The G8 promise of universal access to comprehensive HIV services by 2010 is slipping away. Ask the Government to take bold action to prevent children’s lives being lost and help get the universal access target back on track.

Protect mothers and babies - stop the inappropriate promotion of baby milk.
Baby milk promotion confuses parents by implying that baby milk is as good as breastfeeding. It also puts mothers’ and babies’ health at risk. Help change the law and stop baby milk promotion.

Update on UNICEF UK campaigns
Campaigners can now lobby their MEPs to help child victims of trafficking.
Campaigners can now use UNICEF UK’s website to lobby their MEPs. UNICEF UK is asking campaigners to use this new system to contact MEPs on child trafficking. Over the last few years, trafficking in Europe has increased and a European wide response is needed.
