Liberia - FOOD AID

The civil war in Liberia disrupted agricultural production severely, consequently the country faces critical food deficit. The situation in areas outside Monrovia is particularly acute since they are remote, inaccessible and because of broken bridges, wide rivers and the restrictions on the transportation of relief food.

The food problem is most acute in the areas within the periphery of Bong, Upper Margibi and Grand Bassa counties. A nutritional survey which was carried out recently by SCF revealed there was widespread malnutrition in the area and that a food distribution linked to seed rice will help to alleviate the situation.

Since SCF began its food distribution programme over 100,000 displaced people (mostly children) have benefited from its supply of rice, Liberia's staple with some remarkable improvement in the nutritional level in the area.

This photograph was taken during a typical food distribution day in Nyanwellie, Lower Bong County, where a raft was built to facilitate food distribution on both sides of the Farmington River which flows through the town.
