This photo shows the cleaning of
Soniwien, Monrovia's longest gutter. The cleaning was sponsored by Save the
Children's sanitation programme. Soniwien which is over two miles long is in
central Monrovia. It was built about ten years ago to combat the flooding of
the communities in the area stretching from Clay street through Rally Time
Market to Group of 77 on Newport street. The people living along two its two
sides constantly dump their rubbish in the gutter. As a result, during the
rainy season the areas are flooded.
Before the rains this year, SCF
sponsored the cleaning of the gutter by excombatants of the National Voluntary
Corps.
